High altitude causes hypoxemia → hyperventilation → respiratory alkalosis (low PaCO2). Over 2–3 days, kidneys compensate by excreting bicarbonate, lowering HCO3− toward normal. Hypoventilation would worsen hypoxemia, and diarrhea is not implicated.
